The Women’s Clinic is Edinburgh’s first private clinic dedicated exclusively to women’s hormonal and reproductive health. Founded by Dr. Catherine Smith, an experienced GP and registered menopause specialist, the clinic offers expert, compassionate care tailored to women navigating contraception, perimenopause, menopause and general women's health concerns.
Dr Catherine Smith
Dr Catherine Smith brings nearly two decades of experience in general practice, with a deep specialisation in women’s health. She is a partner at Edinburgh’s West End Medical Practice, where she has been providing comprehensive NHS primary care since 2010.
A Doctor Who Truly Understands Women’s Health
Dr Catherine Smith grew up in the Scottish Borders and fulfilled a lifelong ambition when she graduated in Medicine from the University of Glasgow in 2003. After early hospital training in the south of England, she returned to Scotland in 2004 and has called Edinburgh home ever since.
Her early career spanned a wide range of specialisms—including A&E, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and internal medicine—across both Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the Borders General Hospital. She also gained international experience working in Sydney, Australia.
Drawn to the connection and continuity of care that general practice offers, Catherine became a GP partner at West End Medical Practice in Edinburgh, where she has provided NHS care for over 14 years.
Women’s Health has always been her specialist interest. She holds diplomas in Family Planning and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and spent several years working at the city’s former Dean Terrace Family Planning Clinic.
Alongside her clinical work, Catherine is also committed to mentoring the next generation of GPs as a qualified GP trainer within the NHS.
Outside of her work, Catherine lives with her husband, two children and very excitable spaniel. She enjoys running, cycling, Pilates, tennis, socialising with friends and ferrying her children around their various activities.
A Personal Welcome
Hi, I’m Dr Catherine Smith – founder of The Women’s Clinic.
I started this clinic (originally known as The Coil Clinic) after seeing first-hand how difficult it can be for women to access timely, personalised care for contraception and hormone-related health concerns.
Too many of my patients were facing long waits, short appointments, or struggling to get the answers they needed. I wanted to change that.
The Women’s Clinic was created to offer something different — a calm, professional and welcoming space where you have time to talk, feel listened to, and receive expert care you can trust. Whether you’re seeking support with perimenopause, menopause, or contraception, we’re here to help.
We’re based in a quiet, easily accessible part of Edinburgh (Blackford), with good transport links and parking nearby — designed to fit around real life.
I look forward to welcoming you soon,
Dr Catherine Smith

What Our patients say...
- Very helpful, compassionate and professional. Was able to get answers to what my previous GP and other drs. were puzzled about and considered "weird symptoms." They were, in fact, textbook menopause and along with expert advice and reassurance I wasnt crazy or it was "all in my head" I got an immediate prescription. Highly recommend.
Felt a little anxious on arrival but was made to feel welcome, consultation was through, and left feeling relaxed & reassured
I can only echo the previous reviews - in my opinion they are correct in every detail.
Dr Smith is a wonderful, caring, empathetic GP!
