A note from Dr Catherine Smith

Hi, I’m Catherine – GP and Women’s Health Specialist.

When I opened the clinic in 2024, my goal was simple: to create a space where women feel heard, supported and in control of their health.

After 20 years working in general practice and women’s health, I know how often women are dismissed with their symptoms or unable to easily access the information or services they need.

I set out to change that, so at The Women’s Clinic, you’ll get:

When you book an appointment at The Women’s Clinic, you’ll be seen by Dr Catherine Smith, a highly experienced GP and specialist in women’s health with 20 years of clinical practice.

Dr Smith is a member of both the British Menopause Society and the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health, holding advanced qualifications in both contraception and menopause care. She’s also one of the few clinicians in Scotland who is on the BMS Specialist Register  – enabling her to offer truly personalised, holistic treatment.

Her particular expertise in coil and implant fittings is shaped by years of experience and a deep understanding of how these choices impact real lives.

But more than qualifications, what sets Dr Smith apart is how she listens. Every woman is different. Every symptom matters. Her mission is to make sure you feel heard, informed and supported – no matter where you are in your journey.

Can I get my hormones tested? I get asked this almost weekly, and most of the time my answer is no, and this is why…If you're over 45 with classic menopause symptoms, I can diagnose you clinically, based on your symptoms, not a blood test. Even between 40-45, with textbook symptoms, hormone testing usually still isn't the right move. What's more useful at that age is checking things like thyroid function and vitamin D, to make sure nothing else is being missed.The same principle applies once you're on HRT. I don't treat a lab number, I treat how you feel. If your symptoms are under control, your oestrogen level genuinely doesn't matter. The goal is symptom-free or feeling 80-90% better, not a specific figure on a report.There is one exception. If you're on a maximum dose patch and still symptomatic, that's when checking your estradiol level earns its place.It tells me whether you're absorbing that delivery method well, whether we need to change how you're taking it, or whether you need a dose above the standard range.Hormone testing isn't useless. It's just not the blunt tool it's often treated as.Want to understand this better for your own situation? Testosterone is a bit like marmite in the hormone world - but it’s vital to know that it isn’t just a “male hormone”, and in fact it’s one of the three female hormones, alongside oestrogen and progesterone! For some women, it’s the piece missing from their menopause management.When it works, it works well: Restored libido, sharper cognitive function, more energy, and sometimes it’s the small stuff that changes most. The tasks you’ve been putting off for no real reason suddenly feel manageable again.The honest caveat though, is like I said - it’s genuinely Marmite! Roughly half of women who try it love the difference.
