Frequently asked questions

Have questions? These are our most asked questions by patients, but don’t hesitate to contact us if you still have questions.

Contact us
  • How long does a coil removal take?

The appointment lasts around 20 minutes. With the actual removal taking just a few minutes if your threads are visible.  It may take longer if your threads are not visible.

  • Can you still remove my coil if the threads are missing?

We have special tools to try and recover or find your missing threads. However this is not always successful. In such complex cases you will need to be referred to gynaecology.

  • When should I have my IUD removed

    • It has expired.
    • You want to get pregnant.
    • You’ve had side effects like heavy bleeding, severe headaches, or other pain.
    • Your IUD has moved out of your uterus or has broken.
  • Does having a coil removed hurt?

Removing an IUD is usually less painful than putting it in. There is typically some discomfort when having a coil removed, but this can vary significantly from one woman to another. We recommend taking ibuprofen or paracetamol before the appointment to minimise discomfort and provide pain relief. We can also use anesthetic gels and sprays to help numb the area and provide additional relief if required.

  • How quickly does fertility return?

Fertility can return immediately after IUD removal, so there is no waiting period for trying to conceive after removal.

  • What can I expect after a coil fitting?

You may have cramps and spotting or light bleeding for a few days after your IUD comes out. Taking ibuprofen or paracetamol can help you feel better.

  • When can I have a coil removed?

A coil can be removed at any point during your menstrual cycle.

  • Can I bring a friend or relative?

Absolutely!  We have tea and biscuits for everyone.
