Private Mirena Coil Fitting in Edinburgh
The Mirena coil is a hormonal intrauterine system (IUS) that releases a low dose of progestogen directly into the uterus. It provides highly effective contraception for up to eight years and significantly reduces, or in many cases stops, monthly periods.
Long-lasting, reversible, and one of the most effective methods available, it’s a popular choice for women looking for low-maintenance contraception that works quietly in the background.
- Dr Catherine will help put you at ease during the fitting, using anaesthetic gels and sprays to numb the area and help manage any discomfort.

April 25, 2025Had my coil removed, Catherine was professional and friendly, and put me at ease by explaining what I may experience during the procedure. I was made to feel relaxed and didn’t even realise she had removed the coil, it took no time at all and was completely painless. Lovely clinic and I was made to feel welcome as soon as I entered.

July 20, 2024I had an IUD fitted with Dr Smith and whilst it was a little uncomfortable, it was a lot better than I’d been anticipating! She was excellent as was her assistant and I felt very reassured whilst having the procedure done.
Mirena Coil Fitting Frequently asked questions
Have questions? These are the most frequently asked questions from patients about our Mirena Coil Fitting. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are still unsure about anything.
Contact usHow long does a coil fitting take?
While the appointment lasts around 40 minutes in total, the actual fitting normally takes around 10 minutes.
Does having a coil fitted hurt?
There is typically some discomfort when having a coil inserted, but this can vary significantly from one woman to another. We recommend taking ibuprofen or paracetamol before the appointment to minimise discomfort and provide pain relief. We also use anaesthetic gels and sprays to help numb the area and provide additional relief.
How quickly is the coil effective?
The Mirena coil provides immediate contraceptive protection when fitted within 7 days from the start of your period. If it is inserted at any other time, it will take 7 days to become effective, so you should use additional contraception, such as condoms, during that week. What can I expect after a coil fitting?
Most women have some cramping or discomfort for two to three days after a coil fitting or replacement. A small number of women may have some discomfort for longer. The use of painkillers will generally help.
When can I have a coil fitted?
A coil can be inserted at any point during your menstrual cycle, as long as you’re 100% sure you are not pregnant.
Can I bring a friend or relative with me?
Absolutely! We have tea and biscuits for everyone.
How does a hormonal coil work?
A Mirena coil is a type of hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) — a small, T‑shaped plastic device that is placed into the uterus to provide long‑acting reversible contraception. It releases a synthetic form of the hormone progestogen (levonorgestrel) locally within the uterus.
A hormonal coil works through several local effects of levonorgestrel: it thickens the cervical mucus to block and reduce sperm movement, thins the lining of the uterus (endometrium) making it less suitable for implantation, and reduces or suppresses ovulation in some users. Because the hormone is released directly into the uterus in low systemic doses, it provides effective contraception to prevent pregnancy for several years with fewer systemic side effects than many oral hormonal methods.
